Today on the podcast, we are looking at the big picture and talking all about holistic health, primary foods, and how to use the principle of crowding out to move away from undesirable habits and towards healthier ones.
My favorite definition of holistic health is that it’s the multidimensional approach to wellness which encourages us to recognize our whole being including our physical, mental, emotional, social, intellectual and spiritual selves.
And this idea of holistic health ties in with the concept of primary foods. Primary foods are more than what is on your plate. They’re your healthy relationships, regular physical activity, a fulfilling career, and a spiritual practice that all fill your soul and satisfy your hunger for life. When primary food is balanced and satiating, your life feeds you, making what you eat secondary.
During our March Growth Night with the LBD Collective we discussed the above in depth, and then we touched on the concept of Crowding Out. I was so pleased when it resonated with them so deeply, that I thought I should share a podcast episode about it too!
Crowding out is an approach to habit change that focuses on adding in more of the “good stuff” first, instead of using avoidance behavior as a means towards change. As a result of adding in the desirable habits or behavior, the less desirable or unhealthy habits are literally crowded out – there is no longer time or space for them!

Voices of Children provides psychological and psychosocial support for children to help them overcome the consequences of armed conflict and they also help with the evacuation process. So, it’s very important to me to be able to help and support in this small way.
Kate’s Joyful Corner
I can’t wait to share this week’s joyful corner with you! One of mine and my husband’s goals is to own income property in downtown Gettysburg so that we have a stream of passive income.
And as Dennis and I are going through this process of looking at potential properties we have brought the boys along with us. And it’s been a mission of mine to talk to the kids about what passive income is, why it’s important, and how it can shift the way we live as a family such as spending more time together, time to travel, and to be able to have a positive impact on the world.
So, as owning income properties is our goal, now that Spring has sprung properties are coming on the market. Most of the properties have tenants so our realtor always knocks on the door and says “Remax, is anyone home?” and now Dexter, our 4 year old, will knock on the door and ask, “Remax, is anyone home?” and I just love how he is paying attention and turning into a little real estate agent!
There’s that saying that with kids more is caught than taught and gosh it’s so true, because I didn’t realize how much he was learning from the process with our agent.
Fast forward a week later and my mother-in-law came to visit. She’s staying in our in-law suite, and we’ve made some renovations since her last visit. So, Dexter proceeded to take her downstairs and give her this whole tour of the basement! He pointed out the different features like the new shower head, the new vinyl flooring, where the storage space was, where the bedroom was with the wall mounted TV, and he was doing all of this as if he were a real estate agent!
And it was just such a fun moment for me to realize how much our kids are learning from us, the experience of them getting to do life with us, and how cool it is to involve them in the things that we’re working towards.
